President Carter: Decent housing is a right -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l

Yard work

Yard work. I hate yard work. Especially mowing the yard. I have allergies and mowing the yard makes them react just horribly. Plus I hate gas powered lawn mowers. The vibration, the fumes, the loud engine screaming at me. I really hate it. But since I am a perfectionist I have to do it myself. Ever since I got an electric mower it has made the job of mowing a more enjoyable task.

With an electric mower the engine vibration is a thing of the past. No gas fumes or exhaust. No loud motor humming. Just quiet mowing where, when you are finished, you don't feel like you have been shook to death and you can still hear. I use the Solaris 510121. The great thing about this lawn mower is it has push button starting. No pulling the cord till your arm falls off. It is self propelled. It can cut the average lawn on one charge and has an LED read out that alerts you to how much of a charge you have a left. With the price of gas these days an electric mower just makes sense. Also using an electric mower is greener way to mow your yard since their are no toxic emissions into the atmosphere.

An electric mower can't do much for your allergies but they sure can make yard work enjoyable..

Super Bargain

I wanted to share with one of my super bargains. I found this Angel
at Ross Department Store for $0.49. You read that right 49 cents.

My .49 Angel

When I turned the angel over and looked at the sticker

Sticker Shock

I went into reverse sticker shock. I just could not believe it. I was like oh my goodness I have to hurry and buy this before they realize their mistake. So I literally ran to the check out. The cashier was also a little surprised as well but happily rang it for me.

The only thing I can think of was they really wanted to get rid of it. It was after Christmas when I bought it so it was seasonal clearance but it also had some slight damage to it that you can't really tell (I have worked in quality control for most of my career so I really inspected it.). There is a sculpted ribbon coming down that front with cut pieces of mirror embedded in it that looks like some of the pieces are missing.
Missing mirror pieces

Whatever reason it was clearanced so much I thanked the Bargain Gods and went on my merry way. The angel is beautiful it is metallic silver with beautiful details. It is holding a delicate little flower you can barely make out in the picture.
It holds a delicate small flower

It has beautiful Scroll work wings.

Beautiful wings

It looks almost carved, especially the back.
Back of Angel

I really love it and I am proud of my bargain.

Creating a comfortable Bedroom

Creating a comfortable Bedroom

To me, my bedroom is my sanctuary, my oasis from the troubles of the world. I want to be comfortable in my bedroom. The bed especially has to be comfortable and inviting. Comfortable to lie on and sleep in. I do a lot of reading and writing before I go to sleep at night lying in my bed so it has to be comfortable.

The bedding has to be extra comfortable. I love Candice Olsen Bedding. It is light and comfortable. Like sleeping on a cloud. The line that is my favorite is called "Cloud Nine". I also like Cindy Crawford Bedding. Cindy Crawford's  Designs have  a great sense of style. Wonderful to snuggle up in after a hard days work.

But don't just think of the comfort of the bedding when planning your sanctuary also think of the style. I love Iron Headboards. Iron Head boards create a bedroom with a sense of style and flair. My bedroom has to have the style to make me want to stay in it not just the comfort.

As I said earlier in this post I do a lot of reading and writing in bed before I doze off for the night, a Laptop Bed Desk makes this task a lot easier. I love being able to do this task comfortably while laying in bed getting ready to go to sleep. Is is a convenient and relaxing way to work.

I hope that these Ideas have helped to inspire you to create your oasis and sanctuary from the world, a comfortable, stylish bedroom.

Using Color

Using Color

Color can change your mood. Good use of color in your home can make you happy to be at home. Color can correct a room that is off-balance. It can pull everything together and make a room look finished.

A color wheel can help you experiment with color combinations. The twelve-part color wheel is the most useful tool when it comes to decorating.

There are some rules to remember when using color in home decorating:
·       Don’t use too many colors in one room. Use two to four depending on the size of the room.
·       Decide if you are going to emphasize the furnishings or the background.
·       Coordinate the color of a room with adjoining rooms if you can see one from the other.
·       Use neutral colors to camouflage defects, such as architectural or structural problems that you can’t easily change. Use bold colors to enhance interesting architectural details.
·       Use patterns to make a neutral background more interesting.
·       You can get away with more than one pattern in a room if the patterns use the same color scheme.
Now that you know the rules, you will know what rules to break because as we all know, rules were made to be broken.

One last piece of advice on color, use only the colors you like. Don’t use color just for the sake of having color in your home. You have to live in your home so decorate it with things you love.

Until next time, I hope your designs are courageous.

Consulting a Decorator

Consulting a Decorator

I know I talk a lot about do it yourself (DIY) projects. But what if you are not particularly good at decorating but you love decorating? Just like I love singing but can’t carry a tune in a bucket and I make babies cry when I sing off key I know when to seek help and let more talented people carry on. Or you may be great at decorating but on a particular project you just don’t know where to start or get stuck half way through, that is the time to consult someone with the talent of decorating.

This may or may not be a professional. If you have the money, I recommend hiring a professional decorator or designer. I promise you it will be money well spent. But if you don’t have the money, then I recommend you consult a friend or family member who was sprinkled with decorating fairy dust and has the “GIFT”. If they really love decorating they will be happy to help you just for the camaraderie and maybe a meal. Especially if I am the friend you are asking.

Until Next time, may all your designs be courageous.
